Formal writing Serious Factual Formal Language Informal writing Casual Not necessarily factual Slang/colloquial language Essay Essays communicate complex ideas in a simple way so it must be accessible for everyone.  Essays are always written in third person (this essay...).  Essays are usually formal, well structured, precise and appropriate to its audience. Essay Structure Introduction = sets the scene, provides a little background information about the topic. The body of the story = addresses the title, it should be structured into paragraphs, each paragraph should deal with a different aspect of the title. Use Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link format. A conclusion = reminds the reader what the essay is meant to do, provides an answer to a question and how you reached that answer. A reference list =

Academic sources include:- Books Journals Magazines Websites Author's credentials - The author should be an expert in the field they're writing about References/bibliography - A good source will have a list of works the author studied as he or she is writing it.
